Our research group studies unique characteristics of the cell biology of cestodes, a group of parasitic flatworms.
Parasitic flatworms cause many diseases of medical and veterinary relevance, especially in developing countries.
In Uruguay, the most relevant species for human health and for livestock productivity are Echinococcus granulosus and Fasciola hepatica. These parasites have unique biological traits, including complex life cycles, with larvae and adults that are very different to each other, infecting different hosts.
